Spring Melt & Yard Waste: Bin, Bags, or Municipal Pickup?
Brush, leaves, and winter debris fill driveways every thaw. Here's what cities will take — and when a 10-yard bin is worth it.
Spring cleanup in Canada is predictable: compacted leaves, fallen limbs, old planters, and whatever winter buried along the fence line. Most municipalities offer seasonal yard-waste collection or depot drop-off for leaves, grass, and brush under a size limit. Those programs are free or cheap — use them first for clean organics.
A rental bin starts to make sense when yard waste mixes with construction scraps, broken furniture, fence panels, or reno leftovers. Once you contaminate a yard-waste stream with treated lumber, metal, or household junk, you are into mixed debris pricing anyway.
For a typical suburban spring cleanout with mixed junk, a 10-yard bin for a few days beats dozens of contractor bags and multiple dump runs. Keep soil and sod separate if you can — clean fill is often cheaper in a low-boy than dumped as mixed waste.
