Basement & Flood Cleanup Debris: What Goes in a Bin

Wet drywall, carpet, and ruined furniture need a careful plan. Moisture, mold risk, and prohibited items after a flood.

Flood debris is mostly bulky and wet: swollen drywall, carpet, underpad, particle-board furniture, and soaked insulation. Volume adds up quickly, but weight and contamination matter more. Wet loads are heavier, and some materials become hazardous if sewage was involved — tell your hauler if the water was clean stormwater versus contaminated backup.

A 20-yard bin covers many single-family basement gut jobs. If the crew is ripping out a finished lower level end to end, plan a swap or step up a size. Haul-away can be better when stairs make loading a driveway bin slow.

Do not put fuel cans, chemicals, or appliances with refrigerant in the flood pile. Electronics and documents you hope to recover should be set aside before the bin arrives. When mold is present, follow local public-health guidance — disposal still happens, but how you demo and bag can affect what haulers will take.
