Garage & Shed Demolition: How to Sort the Mess
Wood, concrete floor, metal, and decades of junk. A simple sorting plan that keeps disposal costs from ballooning.
Demolishing a shed or detached garage creates three streams: structure (wood/metal), slab or footings (concrete), and contents (tools, tires, paint, junk). Mixing all three into one bin is the expensive option.
Pull tires, batteries, paint, and propane tanks before demo day. If the slab is coming out, book concrete disposal separately. The wood structure and interior junk usually fit a 14- or 20-yard mixed bin depending on size.
Watch for asbestos-suspect materials on older outbuildings (some roof coatings, old insulation, vinyl products). When in doubt, get testing before you smash and load — surprise hazardous material turns a cheap teardown into a regulated abatement job.
